Fealty Vow

I have included my Knight's vow here as a comparison. When I became a squire of Duke Dag, I wrote this to help me better organize my thought on what I wanted to do as I start on this particular path. Please feel free to use some, all or none of it if it is useful to you.

Dag's Vow: My Vow:
Pan Zygmunt, having seen in you the qualities that are valued by our Society, and the potential to contribute greatly to the Society and Kingdom, I have asked you to become my squire.

As my squire, I require you to stand at my back and aid in the defense of my life and my property. To support my causes when they are just and counsel me when they are not. To defend your Kingdom when in need, and to give weight to my advice and instructions.

As a member of my House, you will obey my commands on the field, honor my lady as you would your own, and when I require service of you, that you put those needs before your own.

For my part, I promise to defend your life and property, and to support you in just causes. I will not give you into danger without need, nor lead you to dishonor by action or command. I promise to teach you what I know of the Society and its manners, and strive to provide a worthy example. To guide you to whatever honorable path you may choose and aid you along that path however I may.

With these things in mind, is it still your wish to become my squire?

Would you add oaths of your own, so these assembled may know your true heart?

Receive from me these symbols:

Wear this chain, as a sign of your fealty, and of our respect for the ideals of Chivalry that I profess.

Wear also this belt, as a sign to others of your loyalty and responsibilities, and as a reminder to me of my obligations to you.

Drink this wine to the dregs and let it symbolize our commitment to House Grammorgin and to each other.

Let it be known and spread the word that I hold this man in high esteem.
I count him as squire, companion and friend and extend the protection of my house to him and his loved ones. Hencefroth, his honor is my honor, and his battles, my battles.

His Grace, Dux Meditarranea Dag Thorgrimsson, has asked that I swear fealty and enter service to him and his house as a squire. To accept the chain of a squire is to set your feet upon the demanding path of the code of Chivalry. This is my attempt to interpret what this code means to me in ourSociety.

The chain of this code is forged of many links – Prowess, Courage, Honesty, Loyalty, Generosity, Faith, Courtesy, Franchise and Fortitude. Of these links, Franchise and Humility are so sublime that they escape accurate definition. My hope is that my actions speak for me in these qualities. To the extent that the remaining qualities can be described, and
in addition to the oath given by His Grace, I shall strive to do no less
than the following:

Prowess
To seek out other Gentles and do great deeds, so that I might find favor with my Lady and my Knight;
To constantly seek excellence as befits a Knight, in whatever wise the King may decree, so that I may stand where my Knight and Crown need.

Courage
To fight when and where my Knight or King says, even if defeat seems inevitable;
To be the shield of the weak – to do or say the unpopular thing, if needed, and to pray for the wisdom to know when to do so;
To right any wrong that I might cause, and do penance so all may see I mean it;
To let the slain say if they be slain, regardless of the impact to my reputation.

Honesty
To keep any vow;
To speak plainly when asked and never speak falsely, realizing that plain speech is no excuse for rudeness;
To always keep my honor spotless, since it reflects back upon my Lady, Knight and thus also my King.

Loyalty
To pledge my sword to my Knight and Kingdom, so that their friends and foes are always mine;
To work to repay the debt that I owe those who have helped me along this path;
To give good counsel to the best of my wisdom.

Generosity
To use all of my talents – teaching, crafting and fighting - for the betterment of my Knight, Kingdom and Society; To hold an open table to the extent my station allows.

Faith
To think the best of others until proven otherwise, and give grace and mercy to all;
To find and aid other Gentles to walk the paths of Chivalry, so that the Society may prosper in the future;
To offer hope and encouragement to all Gentles in our Society, so they may see the Society as good and true as it might be, because to rob others of joy is poisonous to their Dream.

Courtesy
To serve any Lady in need;
To be as gracious in victory as in defeat;
To remember that I always represent others, and show due reverence for the accomplishments of those in the Society;
To treat others as the Nobles they are.

Fortitude
To keep faith with the one who squired me, though my body is weak, though ones I trust fail me and though my own knowledge prove insufficient.

So swear I, Pan Zygmunt Nadratowski.

Finally, the one of the guiding principles of my life: "He who wishes to be a leader of all must first be a servant of all."
